New places to eat this summer

Every year Bali has a new influx of fantastic, delicious new venues that pop up on this beautiful island. We thought we'd share some of the hottest new additions that have come to the scene this Summer!

Peleton Supershop

An interesting combination of an amazing 100% Vegan Café & Cycling Store selling awesome fixed wheel bikes and accessories has recently opened up in Canggu. Don’t worry though, unlike back in Australia your experience wont be invaded by a dozen sweaty cyclists in fluro lycra stopping in for a latte, nor will you be sitting next to any ‘Bondi Hipsters’ bragging about being vegan! Just nice people and good vibes here, this really is the new cool place to hang in Canggu without any pretension.

I must confess I’m a recovering vegan/vegetarian of some 10 years so I had to be dragged to come the first time with the wife for brekky. You know how it is, sometimes a carnivore just wants bacon and eggs to start the day! The Peleton kitchen have done an outstanding job, I left totally fulfilled and satisfied and came back a few days later for the ‘Lance Lasagna’ which was easily one of the best Lasagnas I’ve ever had.

Their talented barista’s serve organic ‘Revolver’ blend coffee which is sure to keep even the pickiest Melbourne ‘espresso snob’ (like me) happy. There’s a great selection of Ayurvedic teas, unique juice combos and smoothies and full menu page of healthy ‘Super Fuel’ like Kombucha, Tumeric, Moringa shots etc.

The staff are friendly and highly trained, wifi is fast and reliable and in keeping with their beliefs of being ‘planet friendly’ and ‘treading lightly’ they are almost 100% zero plastic, which Bali needs a lot more of. Forget that it’s vegan, Peleton is for anyone who loves super healthy and tasty food!

Tiger Palm

Arguably Bali’s favourite ‘restaurantpreneur’ - Will Meyrick has opened up a new restaurant called Tiger Palm to join his other crowd fav’s in Sarong, Mamasan and Hujan Locale.
The ambiance is elegant, yet casual and is open all day long, serving breakfast in the morning, followed by all-day dining and then dinner, continuing late into the night with after-dinner drinks til 2am.

The food is Malaysian, so there’s plenty of spice on the menu if you’re looking for it but if your taste buds can’t handle the heat there’s plenty of mild options. First time I ate here I was incredibly impressed with the size of the portions. For example a massive salmon salad for $7. We tried a wide range of starters and mains, sharing most dishes. We loved it so much we ate there 3 times that week actually! Service is professional and fast, the interior design is excellent and gives you a relaxed feel whilst still giving the feeling of being in a classy restaurant. There’s ice cold beer on tap and a wide range of impressive and unique cocktails to keep your whistle wet!

Tiger Palm is sure to be a big success just like the other venues created by Meyrick. They can be found in ‘The Village’, Seminyak's fancy new shopping mall on Jalan Kayu Cendana (50m down from Seminyak Square, ad opposite Sisterfields).

Lantern ‘Urban Asian Eatery’

I was an immediate fan of this venue when I walked in. Cool dim lighting and interior design that takes your mind to a place elsewhere. Cool 1950s-style swing music sets the mood for a very relaxed and casual dining experience.
The food came out quickly, and service was attentive and cheerful. I had the Thai fish cakes, crispy pork belly bites and the 24-hr braised short ribs – all was certainly up to standard.  Most starters are under 50,000 IDR, mains between 65-115k IDR so it’s very affordable. For a night off the booze I sipped on green tea but the drinks menu looked enticing with plenty of unique ‘Asian-influenced’ cocktails, mocktails & ice teas. They’re located just opposite from Barbacoa, give it a try some time for lunch or dinner.

Nu Lazer

Your one-stop entertainment venue in Sanur ranging from restaurant, sports bar and club. Great DJ’s and Live music at nights, and they always stay open late. The food is excellent with a wide range of Western and Asian street food with fantastic artisan cocktails. It’s not often I find myself over in this neck of the woods but lately when I have been it’s been a pleasure to stop in here for a drink and a bite to eat.
Lunch promo packages only 50K rupiah everyday, the cocktail promo is buy one get one free everyday from 5-7pm. If you’re in Sanur this is a great spot to have a drink, dine, catch the game or have a dance and party.  Open 11am-3am daily.

Miura Pintxos Bar & Grill

The crew who have already displayed their passion and talent by launching Meja Kitchen and Single Malt Whiskey Bar, are having a crack at another daring food & beverage model with Miura Pintxos Bar & Grill – a Spanish restaurant & bar which will more specifically take you to the Basque Country of Spain. While Spanish created tapas, in the Basque Country, Pintxos is served. The name MIURA comes from the famous Bull Breeder Don Eduardo Miura known for producing the most fierce fighting bulls in Spain.

Miura concentrates more on the rich variety of seafood and other products Indonesia has to offer, offering both traditional and modern interpretation of Pintxos with an Indonesian twist. While they also be serving some exclusive cold cuts imported directly from Spain like the Jamon Iberico Bellota, Chorizo, Jamon Serrano and many more...My two experiences dining there have been nothing but excellent. The food was unique and unlike any Spanish I’ve ever had, all the dishes were new to me and everything delicious. They have an excellent range of Gin and exciting cocktails and the sangria is great. I’m sure this place is going to become a regular on the tourist & expat dining scene. Now open for BREAKFAST, LUNCH and DINNER. Starting from 7:30am till LATE.

Jungle Fish

Just a few minutes outside of Ubud is Jungle Fish - an open-air split-level Mediterranean restaurant precariously perched into the side of a hill and overlooking the stunning Osh River Valley. Down a set of stairs from the restaurant is an amazing infinity pool club overlooking the valley.

We skipped the restaurant this time, although made a mental note to return sometime for that, and headed straight to a day bed to soak up the afternoon sun. To use the pool and its facilities, a minimum spend of 150K per person and 75K per child on your food and drinks bill is applied. Which isn’t too bad really if you spend a couple of hours there. The view is REALLY spectacular and it’s well worth the visit. There’s hanging daybeds and private cabanas which you could easily spend an afternoon with friends. The good thing is the crowds of Seminyak / Kuta haven’t seemed to have discovered this place yet unlike many other pool clubs, so you wont be surrounded by poorly behaving bogan tourists in Lebron James singlets or dodging selfie sticks!
The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7:30am – 10pm. Swimming pool is open from 9am – 8pm. Happy Hours at the pool every day from 4pm to 7pm. Cocktails and wine by the glass are 40% off.

Nebula Petitenget

Nebula Petitenget is a stylish new café where the focus is on serving fresh, healthy food that combines Asian and western influences. Here you’ll find really tasty breakfast bowls full of berries, fruits, nuts, granola, coconut etc. They have an excellent range of salads, toasts, juices, healthy shots, smoothies and more.
Main dishes are between 45k for a bowl of pasta and up to 150k for the Aussie Baby Back Ribs, it’s definitely top value for money.  Excellent coffee and friendly staff. It's a really nice space inside and when I was here I easily passed a couple of hours doing some work on the laptop in this relaxed, ‘well-airconned’ environment.

Happy Hour is all day and they do Mojitos and Daiquiri's for just 70k buy one get one free which has to be some of the best value drinks in town! Open daily 7am - 10pm

KZU

OK so this one isn’t new but I had to include it because it’s frequented by expats and locals but maybe not so much by tourists so to most of you reading this it’s probably ‘new’. For many of us living in Bali this has been a lunch and dinner fav for a while now.
KZU is a warung with a difference. Here you find a selection of over 40 fresh and real foods.
The Chef Kazuya Takami has created a menu that’s varied, tasty, fresh and healthy. His influences are Japanese, Indonesian, Italian, and a great selection of vegan options.

The food is healthy & light, clean & cheap and always served fast – REAL food in REAL time! If you like fresh vegies, salads, soups, stews, lean meats & fish served hot or cold you will love KZU. There’s lots of healthy juice & smoothie options and also ice cold coconuts as well.

The Sunset Road restaurant has just added breakfast with a ‘Granola Bar’. This is sure to be a huge success where you can design your own bowl of fresh fruit, grains, yoghurt, acai etc.

Two convenient locations at the top of Sunset Road, 100m from Mama San and also on Jalan Drupadi, in between Oberoi Rd and Jl Diyana Pura.

Spice

I was up in Ubud the other day and after a hectic day of haggling for art and being pushed to challenging new places in a yoga class I stumbled upon this place just in time for dinner. Renowned chef Chris Salans who brought you the amazing Mozaic Ubud and Mozaic Beachclub has a new baby and it’s definitely one worth visiting. It’s been carefully designed to give the feeling of contemporary Bali with the interior walls adorned with a collage of antique chopping boards and vintage kitchen artifacts doubling as canvases for images of ingredients and spices. Even the ceiling is beautifully decorated with traditional Balinese pots and urns.

You can choose to sit at the bar counter that faces the open kitchen which is great because it’s like live theatre in front of you plus you can see how they prepare your meals. Or opt to sit down at communal tables at the front whilst people watching the life of Ubud passing by through massive glass windows.

Spice focuses on Balinese and Indonesian flavours that uses sustainable local fresh produce and the menu adapts to the seasons depending on the ingredients that are available at the market and each dish is based on a highlighted local ingredient. Everything I tried was of good portion, fair price and delicious.

If you’re not eating this is also a stylish yet relaxed venue come for nightcap or afternoon refresher whilst you escape the heat and the wife shops! The drinks list is unique and offers fresh Indonesian ingredients and flavours. Sip cocktails such as Bourbon infused with Jackfruit or Kemangi and Cucumber Gin & Tonic, all based on the same philosophy of infusing Indonesian ingredients to give it that added exotic kick. Open daily 11am – 11pm.

The Spicy Coconut

Just around the corner from where I live is this great little new Vegan café which is well worth the visit. The Spicy Coconut was created by a Balinese and Australian couple who have a passion for cooking for their families and friends and decided it was time to share their food the rest of us! The menu has been made up of the things they love to eat and can be hard to find in Bali but importantly they kept the price low so that people can enjoy the food even if they are on a budget.

People (myself included) are often scared off by the word ‘Vegan’ because they think that it has no taste but The Spicy Coconut team prove that vegan food is delicious and healthy. The menu has fresh coconuts, juices, smoothies, hot and iced coffees, smoothie bowls, fruit bowls, pancake stacks, fresh salads and baguettes. The food and drinks have no added sugar and the staff start the day at the markets every morning so you know that what you are eating is super fresh.
The café Is located on Jl Bautbelig (North Seminyak) just 300m from the beach and it has a very relaxed tropical vibe about it. Service is fast and efficient and the staff are super friendly. They also do take away so you can get anything from the menu on the run.
